Thinking "Better," not "Bigger"

Grant proposal efforts during this year’s first quarter were unfruitful, prompting me to think outside the box for a better second quarter. Admittedly, my financial plan was to rely on grants to (primarily) sustain our work and (secondarily) support our fundraising efforts. But because grant funding is highly competitive, restricted, and not guaranteed, it’s clear that the Board of Directors and I need to think “better,” not necessarily bigger. As the executive director of APPP, I’ve been exploring new, mission-aligned ways to support our efforts—such as hosting unique cultural events in Cartagena and St. Louis, selling heritage-based products created by citizens of San Basilio de Palenque, developing educational services that honor palenquero roots while inviting broader participation, producing resources for success for other non-profit organizations, etc. Creative income streams like these won’t just support our operations; they’ll also deepen our impact and connection with the community.
Grants can be very powerful, but they often come with limitations and timelines that don’t always align with the steady, organic rhythm of cultural preservation and economic development—and organizations that do this work. For these reasons, we’re embracing more sustainable, flexible options that will keep our mission thriving—on our own terms. Whether you attend one of our events, purchase an item made by our SBP partners, or share our services/resources with others, you’re helping build a future where preservation isn’t just funded—it’s celebrated, shared, and sustained. We look forward to incorporating additional revenue streams this year, and hope that you’ll grow with us!
With Gratitude for Your Continued Support,
Erin
